Once upon a dark December evening in the year 2020, your correspondent sat down to ponder the New Year by writing a meditation for his "newsletter" on the subject of "resolutions." It had been a challenging year for himself and for most everyone else in his life. A plague had befallen the planet, and governments had responded with bumbling force, closing borders, pausing "non-essential" commerce, encouraging (sometimes coercing) humanity to hunker down in their homes and wait out the scourge.
